I had a meeting with the senior pastor of music at my church this past week. Having a 14,000 person congregation obviously keeps him fairly busy. We were talking about the peace of God, and he mentioned that he always likes to leave “margin” areas in his life. I asked him what he meant. He said that he needed brief breaks between all the busyness of a very busy schedule. My church has been doing a twenty-one-days- of-prayer movement where they literally get up at 6:00 am for all of those days to pray as a congregation together. Now I have had a bit of trouble getting up so early especially when I write until 1:00 am or 1:30 am in the morning. I plan on being there tomorrow, but this minister has certainly been having some long days this week waking up to be at the church at 6:00 am and then leaving a little past 5:00 pm. But he has planned some moments of “margin” where he “might take a nap” or “play with his kids,” etc.
Today was kind of a break day for me. I edited one chapter of the book and then kind of took it easy. I spent some time with the Lord, took a nap, and tried not to push a ten hour day. The margin here provided some rest to get up and go again tomorrow. Getting a good night’s rest has also been important.
In life I think you also have to remember not to take things so seriously. My mom was getting onto me the other day about an expired license because it was a couple days overdue. She was stressing out about it, and it was not even her license. I casually told her I would get it done. She has an interesting personality where everything must be done right this second. That would drive anyone crazy causing stress. As you watch these YouTube videos with babies pooping in the tub, laugh a little bit. Even if you are offended by the bodily noises, you have to admit that it’s hilarious! Relax. Chill. Rest. And realize not everything has to be done this very second. Enjoy not taking everything so seriously including yourself.
